What is Halfway Herdsires?
- Halfway Herdsires is a service of The Adirondack Alpaca Breeders Association that facilitates arrangements for convenient locations for sire and dam owners to meet for mobile breedings.
How Does Halfway Herdsires work?
- Farms sign up to be a “Host Farm”.
- Breeders planning a mobile breeding use our map to find a host farm at a “halfway” location.
- The breeder then contacts the host farm and makes arrangements for the breeding.
- The host farm collects a reasonable fee from the breeding farms.
What are the benefits of becoming a host farm?
- The visit of two active alpaca breeders to your farm at one time!
- Expose your own alpacas and breeding program to new breeders!
- Meet new people and make new friends!
- Earn a little extra income!
- Take advantage of an inexpensive marketing program!
- A good reason to clean up the barn!
What are the benefits to the Dam and Sire owners?
- Add genetics from geographically distant areas without sending your females (and crias) away!
- Less expensive than a boarded breeding!
- Cut your travel time in half!
- For the sire owner, show off your stud to another breeder and maybe collect an extra breeding fee!
- See new farms and meet new people!
- Inexpensive one on one marketing and networking!
What does it cost to become a host farm?
- Membership as host farm in the Halfway Herdsires Program is only $25/year!
- Membership period begins December 1 of each year
- To sign up just click on the “Sign up Now” link below to enter your farm info and pay.
Guidelines for host farms:
- Set a reasonable fee in advance i.e. $25 -$100 to be split between the dam owner and sire owner.
- You may want to offer other services to the visiting farms i.e. lunch, accommodations etc.
- Use a neutral area such as a spot on the lawn away from existing pastures to reduce risk of parasite transference.
- Confirm at least 24 hours in advance to be sure all parties are planning for the same schedules and location, etc.
- You may want to offer a discounted fee for fellow Halfway Herdsire Host Farms.
